In 2009, the FDA warned consumers against several Zicam products, including Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Gel, Zicam Cold Remedy Swabs, and Zicam Cold Remedy Swabs Kids Size.  This warning came after the FDA received over 100 reports of anosmia associated with the use of the remedy.

Anosmia is no minor matter. It can be very dangerous to lose the ability to smell. Users of Zicam are also at a risk of being robbed of their sense of taste as well. This can be very dangerous, as many with anosmia fail to take in adequate nutrients. The agency said that many people who had loss their sense of smell experienced this after the first treatment with Zicam.  It has also been noted at later doses, however. Loss of smell can decrease a person’s quality of life and hinder their ability to identify hazardous smells such as smoke, gas, or odor from spoiled food.
